226 to end!

WOW! this was such a great read. it really makes me want to read more of Neal Shustermans books. so much happened in this reading i don't even know where to start! some of the most significant developments were Lev evolving into a character more like Roland rather than the soft personality he used to be. as Lev goes through the same journey that connor and risa went through on their way to the graveyard, lev quickly makes it clear that he does not wish to be messed with. this is all part of how lev has changed into a rather intimidating character. One other big character change occurred with roland. He seemed to keep the same personality right up until his fight with connor. just as roland was about to squeeze the last drops of life out of connor he stopped. he could not do it. so as a result he burst into tears. This is huge because throughout the book roland showed nothing in his heart but intimidation, and anger. Relationship wise connor and risa have completely broken out of their shells and even share kisses whenever they get the chance. These two characters had grown to love eachouther by the end of the book. A very interesting peace of symbolism was uncovered with rolands shark tattoo. This shark symbolised rolands commanding presents wherever he went and when he was unwound the arm with this tattoo was passed onto connor. I think this symbolised connors leadership role in the novel especially when he takes over to job of looking over the graveyard and even starting his own rebellion against unwinding. This was a great read and i really hope they make it into a movie.

Wow what a great read. So much happened in this reading in terms of character development, theme, and plot progression.

First, the biggest thing is the change in character within CyFy or should I say CyTy and Lev. As we know Lev and Cy are on their way to Joplin to satisfy Tyler’s overhanging troubles. As they go on Tyler begins to take control of Cy's body due to the familiar images seen in Joplin. Soon they arrive at Tyler's parents’ house and by this time Cy has allowed Tyler to take complete control over his body. Tyler digs up a case full of jewels and in an epic climax Lev threatens the former parents into telling tyler that they will not unwind him in order to permanently settle his mind. Also Lev has changed from a well off, patient boy into a hard, aggressive man. You can tell this is happening because since Lev escaped he has conned a pawnbroker and potentially could have killed a man. Lev has been so tested by his experiences that he is a completely different kind of character.

In terms of theme, well there isn’t one! But there is one topic constantly debated over by the unwinds and everyone else and that is of course abortion. When the unwinds are loaded into their crates Hyden starts the discussion doing what he calls, :running your hand across a flame" His controversial topics provide a heated discussion throughout the flight. The unwinds talk about how you still live after you are unwound and the soul. They fail to come to a common conclusion over the topic.

Unwind post #3 117-165!

In this weeks reading, another very intriguing character was introduced. His name is Cyfi 1/8 of his brain is that of an unwind. Lev meets Cyfi on his travels and finds out that he is a brilliant schemer and does much to help Lev survive. But back to the point, the most interesting thing about Cy is that he is part unwind. This provids some interesting discussion about the book. What symbolism could be interpreted by this new addition to the plot?

Although the author tells us that Unwinding has become a widely accepted concept he also stresses the fact that many people are very disturbed by it. For example, Connor and Risa are involved with a huge plot to save run away unwinds. Why would this exist if there were no people around who apposed Unwinding? But the reason why it is so protested is not just because it is immoral, but also because of the effects it has on is patients. That brings me back to Cyfi. Part of his brain is made from an unwind but the effects go deeper than you would think. Cyfi has taken on some of the boys thoughts feelings, and emotions including his addiction to shoplifting. Cyfi hates himself because he is driven to do things that are not part of his personal qualities. As you can see the effects of this concept are much more complex than the unwinds life. It also penetrates the lives of the people getting their peaces.

Finally this leads me to the big question of the reading, Do you think that Unwinding was beneficial to Cyfi? Why? or why not? My answer is no, Because of this he has had to suffer more than he could ever imagine and the things that he was driven to do by his unwind may end up lead him to his extermination.

Unwind reading 2 pg. 51-117

This weeks reading drew me more into that book than i ever thought possible. I found out many more things about character development as the author gave the reader a deeper and deeper look inside the protagonists' thoughts and feelings. For example, at the end of the reading new traits were exposed about Risa and Connor as they begin to come out of each others shells hardened by the misfortunes and betrayal of their lives. Not only do we get to see inside the character, but new characters are implanted in the plot. The interesting thing about this can be uncovered when you look deeper into why these characters were placed in the plot and analyise each ones contribution to the plot. When Risa and Connor arrive in the antique store they encounter three new fellow unwinds. Hayden is the brains of the three. He is constantly adding his own unique input into such things as unwinding and harvest camp and seems to contribute a sense of wonder to the idea of unwinding that gets the reader to think about how it would feel to live in a world were something like being unwound would occur often. Roland is the brawn. Much bigger and more intimidating than Connor, Roland has placed himself as a type of leader who attempts to govern everyone he comes in contact with. Connor's and Roland's conflicting testosterone creates added drama to Connor's experience. The final Unwind has yet another aggressive attitude most likely an effect of traumatizing events occurring within her personal life. Mia's purpose in the story has yet to be revealed but her snappy comments conflict with Hayden's thought provoking theories and provides a balance between the two mind sets.

Unwind, Neal Shuterman, pg. 1-50 Blake S.

This week I read pages 1-50 in the novel Unwind. Since the beginning of the book I have been intrigued with its ideas and the action never seems to die down. One of the things I find most interesting is the way the story is told. The author separates the different chapters in the book by the different points of view each character offers. As you read the story, you see how all of the lives and thoughts of the characters are bound together by the events. Such an event occurred at the beginning of the novel. Connor had been caught by the police by the highway and decided to run across the crowded street. As he runs a bus crashes and he is hit by a balck truck. Later, when you read from other points of view, you find out that the people in those vehicles are also "unwinds" and are connected in the plot. I find this extremely useful because the reader is able to analyze how each of the characters sees one other and how they react to the same event only in different ways. For example; Connor, the main protagonist in the story, sees being unwound as an insulting and inhuman thing for a parent to do to their child. Connor is very hurt by his parents' decision to unwind him. On the other hand you have Lev. Lev is a very religious kid who has embraced the idea of sacrificing his body to god and almost wants to be unwound. Lev sees this as his purpose in life. Connor says, "Maybe he is over the duty of being tithed. Maybe he is finally starting to see the sense of staying alive." (46) Even by looking at how one of the the characters explains the concept can give us an inside look on what they really think of it.
